A tenuous advert on the Classic Rock Society website and a phone call from Guy Manning led to me joining Manning in April 2008. A Progressive Rock band from Leeds with folk leanings.
It was an interesting period for me as I was playing songs I knew, and rather liked (and still rather like!).
We experienced line-up changes throughout the time I was there – leading to me being the longest standing member of the band (bar Guy & Julie). This was also my longest time with a single band during my music career – although Deadline / COP was longer but was two names.
I enjoyed it for most of the time I was there – but then a line-up change led to me hating yet another drummer – and a guitarist – and I was left with a feeling like I was just treading water. I wasn’t in a good mindset either – my Dad was ill with terminal cancer and I was really not interested in my music at that time.
During my time with Manning I did play a hell of a lot of good gigs though – including RoSfest, Cambridge Rock Festival, Progmeister Festival, ProgYES, Danfest and Summers End – but nearly always on stages which were just too full!!! At our biggest we were an 8 piece! After the 4 piece of Deadline it felt massive and too bloody loud – and Deadline was a rock band.
